In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, the Indian government launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, a coordinated series of airstrikes targeting alleged militant camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The operation was executed in direct response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, mostly tourists. India has blamed the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) for the incident.
According to military sources, nine targets were hit in cities including Bahawalpur, Muridke, and Muzaffarabad. The Indian Air Force used Rafale fighter jets equipped with SCALP cruise missiles and precision-guided HAMMER bombs. The operation, lasting just under 25 minutes, was described by officials as “highly successful” with visual proof of target destruction reportedly gathered and archived.
One of the most significant strikes occurred in Bahawalpur, reportedly impacting a compound linked to JeM leadership. Indian authorities claim several high-profile operatives were killed, though Pakistan has denied these claims and accused India of unprovoked aggression.
In response, Pakistan’s military claimed to have shot down five Indian aircraft, including Rafales and MiG-29s, and conducted its own retaliatory drone and missile attacks targeting Indian border regions such as Amritsar and Jaisalmer. India countered these strikes using its S-400 air defense systems, reportedly intercepting most incoming threats.
Both nations have placed their armed forces on high alert, and civilian evacuations have been reported near border areas. So far, over 35 civilian casualties have been reported on both sides.
International concern is rising. While calls for restraint have been issued by several countries, including the U.S., China, and Saudi Arabia, diplomatic solutions remain elusive. Regional analysts warn that further retaliation could push the long-standing India-Pakistan conflict toward a broader military confrontation.
As of today, tensions remain high, and the situation is being closely monitored by global security organizations.
